HAITI: Outbreak of Cholera – 135 People Have Died in Last Two Days and 1,000 in Hospital

Posted on October 21, 2010

The most efficient killer in Haiti has appeared about 80 kilometers north of Port-au-Prince, around the town of St. Marc.  It is thought to be cholera, but  final test results are necessary before confirming it tomorrow.  Cholera can kill a person within hours.  In addition to the area of the initial outbreak, health officials are very concerned that it could spread to Port-au-Prince where 1.3 million people live in camps with lousy shelter and little potable water which is critical for stemming the spread of the disease.  Thank goodness the Cuban doctors are in Haiti.

Sebastian Walker has been reporting from St. Marc this evening on Al Jazeera.  Click here to read Walker’s article.
