On this month of March 2010 marks the 34th anniversary of the violent end of the Puerto Rican Revolutionary Workers Organization, the continuum of the Young Lords Party. This ugly episode was the culmination of the FBI’s Operation COINTELPRO. This government onslaught had destroyed the Black Panther Party as well as other sectors of the progressive and revolutionary movement in this country by 1976.
Despite the set-back of the people’s struggle then, there are many valiable lessons contained in this history for building the future revolutionary movement. There is no power greater than the power of oppressed and exploited people. The awakening and active expression of millions of people in this country, like the Young Lords, who were impacted by the Black Panther Party’s call for socialist revolution, was a momentum that will indisputably come to life once again.
